Il genere Euphorbia comprende un vasto numero di piante dicotiledoni (con foglie carnose) della famiglia delle Euphorbiaceae, erbacee o legnose a seconda della specie. Abbonda nel Mediterraneo e nell 'area della provincia salernitana l'Euphorbia characias nelle parti interne più umide e ombrose

Il termine Euphorbia deriverebbe dal nome del medico greco Euphorbus (1°secolo a.c.) che utilizzava il succo lattiginoso prodotto da queste piante nelle sue pozioni. Era il medico personale di Giuba II e fu questo dotto sovrano a denominare così in suo onore la pianta, all'interno di un trattato che scrisse per illustrarne le virtù terapeutiche. Il suo nome volgare è Euforbia cespugliosa, Euforbia a cespi.
