L'ontano napoletano è una pianta originaria italiana, si trova soprattutto in aree come l'appennino campano e calabro-lucano. Forma boscaglie ripariali. Alnus è un genere di pianta della famiglia delle Betulaceae che comprende alcune specie comunemente note come ontani.
Gli ontani sono alberi generalmente di piccola taglia, o cespugli. Si sviluppano sino a 8-10 metri, eccezionalmente raggiungono i 25-30 metri. Le foglie sono semplici, caduche, alterne, a margine dentato. La rapidità di crescita degli ontani e la loro resistenza a condizioni sfavorevoli ne hanno fatto apprezzare l'uso come essenze nella bioremediation (come il recupero di cave, siti minerari, aree incendiate).
Il genere Alnus comprende una trentina di specie, tra cui l'ontano napoletano che costituisce un endemismo che cresce in natura solo nell'Italia meridionale e in Corsica, formando estesi boschi.
Il legno di ontano nero per la sua notevole durata usato sommerso nell'acqua è stato utilizzato in passato per la costruzione delle fondamenta della città di Venezia. Infatti l'albero produce un legno che viene usato per lavori di falegnameria: lasciato all'aperto deteriora rapidamente mentre è molto durevole se rimane sommerso in acqua, per tale motivo viene usato per opere idrauliche e per pali da immergere in acqua.

The wood of black alder have for its remarkable water durability been used for the construction of the foundations of the city of Venice. Nowadays the tree produces a timber that is used for carpentry work: left outdoors deteriorates rapidly while it is very durable if it remains submerged in water, for this reason is used for water projects and for poles to be immersed in water.
