Oasi WWF dal 1997, in convenzione con il Comune di Giffoni Valle Piana è ricompresa nel Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Picentini. Occupa una superficie di 600 ettari circa, dagli 800 m ai 1660 m s.l.m.

L'Oasi Wwf Monte Accellica è caratterizzata da ambiente boschivo montano ricco di acque, con presenza di fenomeni carsici.

Grazie a un territorio estremamente articolato, l'Oasi si presenta come il più ricco ed importante campionario di specie vegetali di tutto il massiccio dei Picentini.
In essa si potranno ammirare secolari esemplari di faggio, il carpino nero, l'acero montano, il raro acero di Lobelius, il tasso dalle sue stupende bacche rosse, il maestoso e affascinante cerro, la quercia amica dell'uomo fin dalle sue origini.
Il sottobosco, ricchissimo ed in alcuni punti impenetrabile, presenta esemplari di agrifoglio, biancospino ed erica arborea, che grazie alla tranquillità di cui quest'angolo di mondo ha goduto, si sono potuti sviluppare in tutta la loro antichissima bellezza.
Per quanto poi riguarda i fiori e le erbe, risultano essere presenti degli endemismi presenti solo su questa montagna e in pochissimi altri posti, l'Aquilegia champagnatii, bellissimo fiore azzurro, divenuto a buon diritto simbolo dell'Oasi. 
A quote meno elevate è presente un castagneto secolare e nella piccola zona pianeggiante vi sono coltivazioni di nocciolo ed olivo. Tra i mammiferi, troviamo il lupo, il gatto selvatico, la faina, la martora, la puzzola, il tasso, la volpe, la donnola, la lepre italica, il ghiro, il moscardino, il quercino. Sono state individuate tracce di presenza di lontre. Tra gli uccelli poiana, gheppio, sparviere, nibbio bruno, astore, falco pellegrino, aquila reale, picchio nero, assiolo, allocco, barbagianni.

Nella grotta dello Scalandrone trova rifugio un pipistrello, il rinofolo minore o ferro di cavallo, minacciato in quasi tutta Italia. Tra le specie preda più importanti la rarissima lepre italica, il cinghiale, il ghiro, il moscardino, la talpa romana.

All'interno dell'Oasi si trova un Orto Botanico dove è possibile ammirare e studiare tutte le specie arbustive ed erbacee che nascono lungo le rive del Mediterraneo.

 

 

 

Monte Accellica WWF Nature Reserve

Monte Accellica Nature Reserve is under the protection of WWF since 1997, in convention with the City Hall of Giffoni Valle Piana. It is part of the Monti Picenti Regional Park and it takes up about 600 hectares.

This nature reserve is characterized by a wooded mountainous environment full of waters and with the presence of karst phenomena.  

The reserve is the richest area of the Picentini mountains when it comes to vegetal species. In fact it is possible to find centuries-old beeches, the ostrya carpinifolia, the sycamore, the Lobel's maple, the majestic and fascinating Turkey oak, the taxus with its beautiful red berries, the oak. The underwood is very reach as well and sometimes also impenetrable, it has specimen of holly, the common hawthorn and tree heath, which have grown at the maximum of their beauty thanks to the incredible calmness of this little slice of word.

As for flowers, in this nature reserve are present several endemic specimen which can only be found here and in very few other places. One of these is the Aquilegia champagnatii, very beautiful blue flower, which has become the symbol of the reserve. At lower height there are centuries-old chestnuts while in the small flat area it is possible to find cultivation of hazels and olives. Among the mammals there are wolfs,  wildcats, beech martens, polecats, martens, foxes, weasels, Italic hares, edible dormice, hazel dormice, European badgers and garden dormice. Traces of the presence of otters have been found as well. Among the birds is possible to see buzzards, kestrel, sparrow hawks, black kites, Northern goshawks, peregrine falcons, golden eagles, black woodpeckers, scops owls, tawny owls and barn owls.

In the Scalandrone’s cave the lesser horseshoe bat finds shelter. Others very rare species live in the nature reserve such as the boar and the roman mole.

In the reserve there also is a botanical garden where visitors can see or study all the species of shrubs and herbaceous of the Mediterranean coasts.
